About William James
William James (1842–1910) was the Harvard psychologist-philosopher who popularized pragmatism and pioneered scientific psychology in America. Brother of novelist Henry James, he trained in medicine and wrote The Principles of Psychology and The Varieties of Religious Experience.
Interpretation
This is the core of James's theory of truth and the sentence most often quoted out of his argument. He is denying that an idea is true by corresponding to a ready-made reality and proposing instead that truth is something that happens to an idea when acting on it works out. "Made true by events" means verification is a process in time, not a property an idea already has. Critics have argued this conflates truth with usefulness, and James spent later lectures trying to answer that objection.
Why it matters
The practical version: treat a belief as a hypothesis whose value is shown by where acting on it leads. That stance makes revision cheaper, since being wrong is information rather than a defeat.
