Mozi (Mo Di, c. 470–c.
Interpretation
Mozi's doctrine of impartial care is a direct challenge to the Confucian view that regard should be graded by relationship. His argument is consequentialist rather than sentimental: partiality produces conflict, so the disorder of his time is traced to the failure to care equally. The second clause adds the reciprocal benefit, which is his answer to the objection that impartial care is unnatural. He is prescribing a standard on the basis of what it produces.
