About Zhu Xi
Zhu Xi (1130–1200) was the Southern Song synthesizer of Neo-Confucianism whose commentaries on the Four Books became imperial orthodoxy for centuries. He organized cosmology of li (principle) and qi (vital stuff) and built academy pedagogy.
Interpretation
Zhu Xi is describing knowing and practice as mutually reinforcing rather than sequential. His claim against a purely intellectual approach is that clarity without earnest practice is not yet real clarity; his claim against a purely practical one is that practice unguided by understanding does not deepen. The formulation makes them a single circuit. In his account this is why the investigation of things and the cultivation of the person are one undertaking.
